Michael Ballack: “Kai Havertz has proven – even before #Chelsea – that he can fulfill the striker role well. It’s a shame, though, because I see him in a system that’s ideal for him behind the striker. There , he can even make better use of his qualities.” (@SPORTBILD)

  1. I been saying this ever since we signed kai. He’s clearly a shadow striker or a #10. He’s not a #9.

  2. Michael, I love you. But mate, we need to end this Havertz at Striker narrative. It’s completely false.

    Well, for now at least

  3. I agree Michael, that’s why Bayern Munich should save us from him (err… I mean, save him from us) as soon as humanly possible.

  4. Kai is another Ozil or Ballack, not another Drogba or Haaland

  5. Kai won us a CL – great.

Kai stole ~3 seasons worth of living doing nothing else in return- great

Now let’s just cut our losses and sell him to bayern. He will be an absolute baller there and we will get a different player who fits our system and style.

    Good for all parties

  6. Honestly though, this obsession to sticking to the 353 formation has been odd. We depend on our wingers to do so much every game.

We have Kai and Mason who are always jackhammered into the wing or into being a striker, when theyre both better at CAM.

We have so little to defend with in midfield, no real CDM.

We bought Wesley and KK and Cucu to double down on that back 3.

  7. I swear I have read more articles about how good Kai is at attacking than actual pure attacking moments from him

  8. Kai and Mount play the same role really. They both have similar qualities, though havertz may be more of a pure second striker and mount more as a pure CAM.

I personally prefer Mount because he has been much more consistent and we feel much more connected as a team with him as a CAM. He is much more reliable in possesion, a more reliable shooter and passer from distance, more reliable and less risk averse in linkup as well. Much better on the half turn too.

But we really don’t need both their skillsets on the field together. If we play a more defensive 3-4-3, we would only have one of mount and havertz (obviously prefer mount) in the front 3. If we play a more offensive 3-4-3 with Sterling as LWB or a 4ATB, I would prefer puli out there as another winger. A lot more pace and dribbling, and more clinical in front of goal than Kai instead of a redundant skillset with both mount and kai out there.

  9. Kai needs confidence for me. Potter has come in but you can tell Kai is still struggling. Give him some game time, put an arm around his shoulder and I’m sure he’ll come good

  10. During the last few months under Tuchel, he was not up to par in that position, but none of our attackers were playing well no matter where they played.

You can’t deny that he’s shown glimpses of class at the number 9, even though all the master tacticians on this sub seem to know more than someone like Ballack. Especially during the ownership transition/sanction era; against Newcastle and Lille are games that come to mind.

I’m not saying we should be playing him at striker, nor that he hasn’t been disappointing at times. But the idea that he has never shown glimpses as a striker is just wrong.

  11. I’d love to see him get an extended run in a free attacking role behind the 9.

Issue is that is also Mason’s best position… and I don’t think you can have both.

Sure you can shoehorn them both in, but it is at the expensive of a speedy dribbler (Sterling, Pulisic) and they offer something different.
